Why Your Screen Keeps Turning Off

October 15, 2025

We've all been there: you're reading a long article, following a recipe, or presenting a slide deck, and suddenly your screen goes black. It's frustrating, but it's actually a feature designed to save energy.

The Power Saving Mode

Most operating systems, whether Windows, macOS, Android, or iOS, have aggressive power-saving settings. By default, they turn off the display after a few minutes of inactivity to conserve battery life and protect the screen from burn-in.

When It Becomes a Problem

While useful, these settings don't know when you're passively consuming content. If you aren't moving the mouse or tapping the screen, the OS assumes you've walked away.

The Solution

You could dig into your system settings every time you need the screen to stay on, or you could use a simple tool like MyScreenOn. By using the Screen Wake Lock API, we tell the browser (and the OS) that an important task is in progress, preventing the sleep timer from triggering.
